Pre/Post SDR Rehabilitation.
Selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) surgery is a procedure that treats muscle spasticity caused by abnormal communication among the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. It corrects muscle spasticity by cutting the nerve rootlets in the spinal cord that are sending abnormal signals to the muscles. Once they have recovered from the operation, rehabilitation should begin straight away. New motor patterns will be established, new neurological pathways with be opened and new skills will be learnt. This can be done in or out of their AFO's depending on the advice of the surgical team. The emphasis will be on functional integration such as, rolling over in bed, stair climbing, walking and play.

Constant assessment and feedback is documented and forwarded to the surgical team and parents upon request.

Once training has taken place, homework will be given! We teach the parents what they need to do on a daily basis with their child and this will leapfrog their progress.
